Feeling the food

A prototype born out of the belief that everything has to be unique and how architecture influences the culinary experience. The curiosity to determine the similarity and diversity in the culture, food and architecture that prevail in India and Italy and the unique result that their amalgamation would produce. The design focuses on creating a sensorial experience where people not only discover the journey of food but also be a part of it. Different zones within the space allow us to get in touch with food not only by tasting it but also by using all our different senses. The project is a blend of product design and synesthetes leading to space design.

CAVE BAR

Inspired by Ellora caves that house the temple of Shiva, the bar features elements that are related to the deity. The form of the ‘Shivalingam’ is replicated in a contemporary manner as the bar counter with the ‘damru’, the drum that Shiva plays, as the stools. Dim lighting and rough texture of the walls enhance the oral-somatosensory experience of the bar. The light represents the dance movement of Thandav.

WINE ARCHWAY

The arched passage leading out from the bar is used to display the exquisite wine collection that the customers can select to pair with their meal or to take home after dining. Wood, a traditionally used material in wine cellars creates an authentic and warm atmosphere within. Mirrored arches on the right help to make the space look bigger whilst hiding the service areas and restrooms behind them.

HERB GARDEN

The courtyard is a herb garden of potted plants in terracotta columns. In this sensorial journey, the customers experience a closer relationship with nature by sight, smell and touch. They are encouraged to also pick the herbs that they would like to garnish their food with.

DINING

Under the pointed roof that is an amalgamation of the Indian gopuram and the Italian trulli, dinner is served. The roof made of terracotta bricks is laid in the Pochampally pattern from South India. Dining being the main course of the journey, it is compared to the ‘garbagriha’ of the temple. The oculus at the top lets sunlight in, that creates interesting patterns within the space with the movement of the sun. The floor has the pattern of Michelangelo's twelve pointed star that symbolizes the historical importance. All the guests are seated at one table as the main motive is to bring back the tradition of sharing food and conversation. The table is shaped like a floating halo, completing the poetry of the space. The Pierre Jeanette chair and the the Le Corbusier table lamp designed for Chandigarh are found in perfect harmony with the concept. Full height glass doors provide a view of the space outside and can be opened to let fresh natural air and the aroma of herbs in.

DESSERT DOME

India’s Taj Mahal and Italy’s Pantheon, both have domes that are widely spoken about. Adding the creative touch of pink interiors with contemporary elements of Hussain Doshi Gufa has created a sinuously flowing space of smooth texture and organic forms where the guests can enjoy their desserts. Seating upholstered with soft fabric continues on the floor seamlessly playing with the sense of touch.
